Polished Concrete Bathroom Floors: Wet-Area Planning

A polished concrete floor can form part of a Brisbane bathroom design when the slab, wet-area construction, drainage, waterproofing or water-resistance requirements, surface finish and maintenance are coordinated. Polishing the concrete does not by itself make the room waterproof, guarantee slip resistance or correct unsuitable falls.

This guide explains the questions to resolve before choosing polished concrete for a bathroom, ensuite or powder room. It is project-planning information rather than a universal specification: the building class, shower arrangement, substrate, floor waste, selected system and approval pathway determine the final work.

Start with the wet-area design, not the sheen

Document whether the project is a new slab, an existing bathroom renovation or a room being converted to wet use. Identify the building class, shower type, floor wastes, falls, thresholds, wall and floor junctions, penetrations, fixtures and adjoining rooms. The responsible designer, builder, waterproofing trade and certifier should coordinate these details.

The National Construction Code's waterproofing-in-houses guide explains the wet-area performance and Deemed-to-Satisfy pathways for houses. It distinguishes the areas that must be waterproof or water resistant and points to the ABCB Housing Provisions and AS 3740 pathway. A polished surface should be detailed within that compliant construction, not substituted for it.

Separate the concrete finish from waterproofing

Polishing mechanically refines the concrete surface. Densifiers, grouts, guards or sealers may form part of a selected finishing process, but their presence does not automatically satisfy every wet-area waterproofing requirement. Membranes, waterstops, junctions, penetrations and drainage details need their own coordinated scope where required.

The NCC Housing Provisions' wet-area waterproofing provisions state, among other things, that shower floors and relevant junctions and penetrations require specified protection. They also identify concrete treated to resist moisture movement as one deemed water-resistant surface material in the applicable construction. The project team must determine the correct compliance solution for the actual bathroom.

Plan falls, wastes and thresholds before grinding

Mechanical polishing follows the slab; it is not a reliable way to create broad drainage falls or redesign a shower threshold after construction. Survey the finished levels, waste positions, shower extent, door clearances and transitions before agreeing the exposure and grinding depth.

Where a floor waste is installed, the applicable NCC provisions address continuous falls and drainage. Confirm the current requirements and any Queensland or project variation with the responsible building practitioner. Do not promise that polishing will remove ponding, and do not grind through cover, falls, waterstops or other construction details without an approved design.

Do not infer slip resistance from a smooth appearance

A smooth polished floor is not automatically slip-resistant, and a higher gloss should not be marketed as safer in a wet bathroom. Performance can change with water, soap, cleaning residue, footwear, surface texture, slope and wear.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland's guidance on floor and ground surfaces explains that surface characteristics, contamination, drainage, transitions and cleaning affect slip and trip risks. If the project requires a slip classification, identify the location, wet or dry test condition, evidence, acceptance party and completed surface rather than relying on the words polished, honed or sealed.

Assess whether the slab can deliver the intended appearance

Existing concrete determines the aggregate, colour, pores, repairs, joints, cracks and edge character. Removing tiles, toppings or coatings can reveal adhesive staining, chase repairs, uneven levels and previous penetrations. A new slab can be planned for a polished finish, but placement, curing, protection and later trade work still affect the result.

Agree the target aggregate exposure and sheen through suitable references or a representative test area where practical. Samples establish a direction, not an exact guarantee that another slab will match.

Coordinate edges, penetrations and adjoining finishes

  • Showers, screens, waterstops, wastes and channel drains.
  • Toilet, vanity, bath and service penetrations.
  • Wall-to-floor junctions and movement or construction joints.
  • Door thresholds, carpet or timber transitions and skirtings.
  • Areas inaccessible to large polishing equipment and the expected edge finish.
  • Cabinetry, fixtures and sequencing so installed items do not block the agreed work.

Edge tools can produce a different visual character from the main field. Confirm acceptable variation before installation rather than assuming a perfectly uniform wall-to-wall finish.

Select protection and cleaning for bathroom use

List water, soap, cosmetics, hair products, cleaners, dyes and other likely contaminants. Select any guard or sealer using current product documents for the substrate, wet exposure, appearance and maintenance. No finish should be described as stain-proof, chemical-proof or maintenance-free.

Use the compatible cleaning method supplied for the completed system. Remove grit, clean spills and soap residue promptly, avoid unapproved harsh chemicals, keep drainage working and inspect wear or damage. A condition-led maintenance plan is more reliable than a universal annual reseal or re-polish promise.

Coordinate underfloor heating separately

Concrete can be used with selected heating systems, but compatibility is not automatic. The designer and suppliers should coordinate the heating layout, slab or topping, control joints, waterproofing, floor build-up, commissioning and operating limits. Grinding depth and penetrations must not put embedded services at risk.

  1. Address, building type, room plan and new-build or renovation status.
  2. Existing slab, coverings, coatings, adhesive, repairs and known moisture history.
  3. Shower type, floor wastes, falls, thresholds and waterproofing design.
  4. Fixtures, penetrations, joints, heating and adjoining floor transitions.
  5. Target aggregate exposure, sheen, colour and acceptable natural variation.
  6. Required slip evidence and responsible acceptance party.
  7. Edges, inaccessible areas, sequencing, access and protection from later trades.
  8. Selected finishing products, return-to-use limits, cleaning and maintenance.

Bathroom polished-concrete questions

Is polished concrete waterproof?

Do not assume it is. Wet-area construction must meet the applicable waterproofing or water-resistance requirements. Polishing and a topical treatment do not replace required membranes, junctions, penetrations, waterstops or drainage details.

Is polished concrete non-slip when wet?

No universal claim is reliable. The completed surface, water, soap, slope, drainage, footwear, cleaning and any required test evidence must be assessed together.

Can an existing tiled bathroom be changed to polished concrete?

Sometimes, but the slab, levels, adhesives, waterproofing, falls, wastes, penetrations and repair appearance need investigation. Removal can reveal conditions that make another finish or a revised build-up more appropriate.
