Honed and polished concrete both mechanically refine a concrete surface, but they are commonly specified for different locations and performance briefs. In Brisbane, mechanically polished concrete is often considered for suitable internal slabs, while honed and sealed concrete is often considered for external or weather-exposed areas. Those are useful starting points, not universal rules.
The right choice depends on the slab, grinding depth, aggregate exposure, weather, water, drainage, required slip evidence, sealer or treatment, traffic, appearance and maintenance. A material name alone does not establish porosity, durability or safety.
What polished concrete means
Mechanically polished concrete is refined through staged grinding and polishing to an agreed aggregate exposure and sheen. A densifier and other compatible treatments may form part of the system. The concrete itself remains the visible finish, so placement, aggregate distribution, cracks, repairs, joints, edges and contamination influence the result.
Internal homes, retail areas, offices and selected commercial spaces may suit polished concrete after the slab and use are assessed. Direct weather, standing water, external drainage and wet-use conditions can change the specification and may favour another finish.
What honed concrete means
Honed concrete is mechanically ground to expose and refine aggregate, usually stopping at a lower sheen before a compatible protective sealer is selected. It is commonly considered for outdoor living areas, entries, paths and selected external spaces because the finish and sealer can be specified around weather exposure and intended appearance.
Honed concrete is not automatically non-slip, stain-proof or maintenance-free. Falls, ponding, contaminants, UV exposure, sealer condition, texture and cleaning remain part of the brief.
Compare the system, not just the gloss
- Location: define internal, covered external or fully weather-exposed use.
- Surface build: record the grinding, exposure, refinement, densifier, guard or sealer and edge treatment.
- Water: consider falls, drainage, ponding, tracked water, pool proximity and cleaning.
- Sunlight: obtain product-specific UV and weather suitability for any sealer or treatment.
- Traffic: identify footwear, furniture, wheels, vehicles, grit, loads and likely contaminants.
- Maintenance: compare cleaning, inspections, local repair and future recoat or refinement.
Aggregate exposure comes from the slab
Cream, salt-and-pepper, partial and fuller-exposure looks involve different removal depths and reveal different amounts of aggregate. More grinding does not guarantee a more uniform finish. It can reveal reinforcement cover concerns, repairs, aggregate variation, holes, edges and placement differences.
Agree the target through references and a test area where useful, while documenting acceptable natural variation. A photograph from another project should not be treated as an exact colour or aggregate promise.
Slip performance needs project evidence
Neither honed nor polished concrete is inherently safe for every wet or dry condition. Surface texture, slope, contaminants, footwear, cleaning, drainage and wear all matter. Workplace Health and Safety Queensland's floor and ground surface guidance describes these interacting factors.
If a building or client brief calls for a slip classification, state the applicable location, test method, condition, completed system and approving party. More texture can affect cleaning, so consider safe use and maintainability together.
Honing and sealing do not repair drainage
External concrete needs appropriate falls, drainage, joints and thresholds. Grinding or sealing should not be sold as a cure for structural movement, active moisture entry or broad ponding. Survey the area and resolve drainage or construction problems through the responsible project parties.
For wet areas inside a building, coordinate the concrete finish with the applicable waterproofing and water-resistance requirements. A sealer is not a generic substitute for a wet-area system.
Sealers and treatments have specific limitations
Ask for the exact product, substrate preparation, application conditions, appearance, UV exposure, water and chemical limitations, return-to-use timing and maintenance documents. Solvent-based and water-based are broad chemistry labels, not proof that a product is suitable for every location.
No universal resealing interval applies. Inspect the surface for wear, water behaviour, staining, whitening, damage or loss of appearance, then follow compatible supplier guidance. A new coat may require cleaning, removal or preparation rather than simple application over the existing surface.
Existing and new slabs need different planning
With a new slab, placement, aggregate, curing, protection, levels, joints and later trades can be coordinated for the intended finish. With an existing slab, coverings, adhesives, stains, repairs, cracks, contamination and unknown concrete can affect feasibility and appearance.

Is honed concrete always more porous?
Do not use that as a universal selection rule. The concrete, grinding, densifier, grout, sealer or guard, application and condition affect moisture and staining behaviour. Compare the specified complete systems.
Which finish is better outside?
Honed and sealed concrete is commonly considered outside, but suitability still depends on weather, water, falls, drainage, UV, slip evidence and maintenance. An external project needs a location-specific specification.
Does polished concrete require no sealer or maintenance?
No. Treatment varies by system and use, and every floor requires compatible cleaning and condition review. Obtain a written handover for the completed finish.
